Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains the nerves and blood vessels. When that pulp becomes infected or inflamed usually from deep decay, a crack, or an injury it can’t heal on its own, and the infection spreads if left untreated. A root canal (endodontic treatment) removes the damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, then seals it, usually finishing with a crown. Not usually. The pain people associate with root canals is really the infection that made the treatment necessary the procedure is what relieves it. With modern anaesthetic, most patients say it feels similar to getting a filling. Mild tenderness for a few days afterward is normal and easily managed.
Common signs include persistent tooth pain, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when biting, swollen or tender gums, a pimple-like bump on the gum, tooth discolouration, or pain after a filling. Only a dentist can confirm with an exam and X-ray, so it’s best to get it checked early.
With a typical insurance plan, root canal therapy often has an out-of-pocket cost of around $200 to $500+, and root canals are usually well covered because they’re considered essential. Without insurance, costs generally range from about $600 to $1,200+ depending on the tooth and severity. We’ll give you an accurate estimate after an exam.
Most root canals are completed in one or two appointments, each lasting about an hour to ninety minutes depending on the tooth. Molars have more canals and can take longer. A follow-up visit is often needed to place the crown that protects the tooth.
